Winter Book Group: Embrace Yoga's Roots by Susanna Barkataki

In our fall edition of the book group, we will be reading Susanna Barkataki’s new book Embrace Yoga's Roots: Courageous Ways to Deepen Your Yoga Practice. As sincere yoga students, it is important that we look at how the practice we love interacts with the greater forces of capitalism, appropriation, equity, and accessibility, forces which ultimately diminish and separate us. What does it look like to not just receive yoga but to embody yoga? And what must we learn and unlearn to practice yoga in a way which does not create harm? These are essential and exciting questions for all modern yoga practitioners and I can’t wait to explore them with you!

In appreciation of the meaning of this book, we will be donating 50% of the proceeds to the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, which is the school and source for all of Sarah’s yoga education and the Krishnamacharya tradition. In particular, these funds will go to their Mitra program, which provides no-cost yoga training to socially and economically underprivileged and differently abled children and adults.

The fall book group will meet for six weeks, with a group meeting on Sunday March 21st at 1pm on Zoom. IMPORTANT NOTE: please consider ordering this book from your local book seller, rather than an online behemoth, which might take some time to receive your book. Please order as soon as you sign up so we can all begin together.

Our community reading group has been one of our favorite offerings for the past few years. This very special program combines self study, home practice, and community learning for an in-depth exploration of a variety of texts on Yoga, Buddhism, philosophy, and spiritual study. Book club is an opportunity to build sangha, or a community of seekers, in a spirit of individual exploration and is perfect for all of us non-joiners.

Our book group series includes:

  • Weekly reading and contemplative assignments. Contemplative practices draw from the themes of that week's reading, helping to integrate and explore the questions and ideas of the text in an embodied way, as well as sowing the seeds for a regular home practice.

  • Continual support throughout the session via email with myself and the book club community.

  • One culminating online community meeting to discuss the book, meet each other, and reflect on your experience.

Cost is $40. If payment is an issue, just get in touch.
